No More Seafood Processing Plants Needed for Mekong Delta by 2015

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged the Mekong Delta region not to build any more seafood processing plants until 2015, given the current material shortage.

The region is now home to 193 seafood processing plants with combined capacity of 1.2 million tons per annum, some 200,000 tons higher than the designed capacity for 2015, the department said.

The opening of more seafood plants will push the regional aquaculture industry into a serious shortfall of materials, it warned.

Currently, the plants are running at only around 51.7% and 58.6% due to material shortages, the ministry added. (Labor)
