New power supply for Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island District in the southern Kien Giang province will receive more than VND9.16 trillion ($436.2 million) to implement three new power supply projects, according to Phu Quoc Investment and Development Management Board.

Approved projects include installation of the Ha Tien – Phu Quoc 110kV underground cable system, which is expected to be completed next year. The 56 – kilometre cable will connect the island to the national power grid.

A 200-megawatt-per-day thermoelectric plant has been planned for construction in Ganh Dau commune.

The Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to work out the planning for the plant.

The thermo-electric plant, worth more than VND7.22 trillion ($344 million), was included in the national power planning to 2015, which was ratified by the Prime Minister.

Under the plan, the first turbines should be operational by 2015.

Another VND180 billion ($8.57 million) will be allocated to developing wind and solar energy on Hon Thom Island, in a project that has the potential to generate 1.27 megawatts of power per day.

The system is expected to go online by the beginning of next year. In addition, a system to supply about 16,500cu.m of tap water per day is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2015.

The project received more than VND266 billion ($12.7 million) in investment, 83 per cent of which was from the World Bank.

Reservoirs, such as the Duong Dong and Suoi Lon, are expected to be upgraded to increase water supply along with installation of water pipeline systems.

Phu Quoc district is also in the midst of planning for construction of sewage infrastructure in An Thoi Town, Ham Ninh and Cua Duong communes.

These projects aim to supply adequate power and water to island residents while also promoting tourism to boost socio economic development. – VIR
