Mobile market share largely held by three network giants

The Ministry of Information and Communications officially announced a new edition of “Vietnam White Book on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) 2011″ in Hanoi on July 12.
This was the third year the White Book had been issued to local ministries and departments, ICT organizations and their foreign counterparts, domestic and foreign research organizations, and trade commissions that cooperated with Vietnamese businesses in ICT, the ministry said.

According to the figures in the book, till the end of December 2010, the country had over 14.37 million fixed phone subscribers, 111.5 million mobile phone subscribers and nearly 27 million Internet users.

In addition, there are now over 500 enterprises operating in digital content industry sector such as VTC, VNG, FPT, VASC and VDC. This sector has attracted about 50,900 laborers.

The data from the ministry also showed of seven mobile telecommunications companies, three network providers namely Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone hold up to 94.53% of the market share and the remaining 5.47% held by four remainders including Vietnamobile, S-Fone, EVN Telecom and Beeline.

Also according to the White Book, in 2010, the total revenue from information and technology sector reached $7.629 billion (growing 23.71%), of which, revenue from hardware industry was $5.6 billion, and total telecommunications revenue was $9.41 billion, including approximately $5.742 billion revenue from mobile services.

Unlike previous years, this year’s book consists of new contents, such as a review of Vietnam’s ICT development over the past decade, the introduction of a project to forge Vietnam into a strong ICT country, analyses of IT infrastructure, post and telecommunications, IT human resources, application and information safety, along with legal documents on ICT, international cooperation activities and the country’s leading ICT businesses.

The new edition will serve as an important reference for State management agencies in their policymaking and help domestic and foreign organisations and businesses work out business strategies and seek cooperation opportunities in ICT in Vietnam. – Vietbiz24
