Mobile charges to be slashed further

The plans to reduce mobile charges that Viettel and the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) submitted to the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIT) before the Tet holiday will be reconsidered in March.

Mobile charges to be slashed further

An official from the MoIT told VietNamNet that the charges of mobile services are about to fall because as of January 15, the connection fees between mobile service providers have reduced by 15 percent.

The connection fee is the fee that the three largest mobile networks – Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone – have to pay to smaller opertors when their subscribers make calls to or receive calls from subscribers of other networks. The fee has reduced from 700 dong per minute to 550 dong/minute for calls made from Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone to other networks and 500 dong/minute for calls made from other networks to Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone.

According to telecom service providers, the connection fee is a significant part in production cost and once the fee falls, they can save a lot of money. This is the foundation for them to further slash mobile charges.

The MoIT will meet with telecom firms to listen to their reports on the roadmaps on charge reduction and to make decision on VNPT and Viettel’s charge slashing plans.
