MobiFone rethinks iPhone distribution plan
Local wireless carrier MobiFone is reluctant to sell the iPhone in Vietnam as the market has not responded to the product as well as expected, a local news website reported Friday.
VnExpress cited a senior manager at MobiFone as saying that the firm is reconsidering its previous plan to distribute the phone this month and it needs more time to study the market.
“We will not stand outside the competition. But MobiFone needs to think more about when to sell the phone, at what price and with what data plans.â€
He said his company may cut prices. “We will have a long-term cautious and suitable strategy to make sure we will win if we sell the phone.â€
Local wireless carriers Vinaphone and Viettel began selling the phone late March, two months after announcing deals with Apple Inc.
Both companies refused to disclose sales figures so far, and analysts say this indicates they must have been very low.
Market observers told Thanh Nien many consumers were disappointed because prices offered by the two companies were not much lower than unofficial unlocked iPhones which have been brought into the country and sold widely for a long time.
