Ministry to probe delays in tourism, resort projects

A comprehensive inspection of State management and the implementation of tourism and resort projects began on Wednesday in Khanh Hoa Province, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

The eight members of an MPI work team are scheduled to work in the province for 45 days.

The MPI inspectors will work with the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment and provincial agencies on investment licences and compensation, land-use rights and site clearance.

Based on their findings, the MPI work team will then propose measures on how State management can be changed.

According to figures from the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment, total registered capital in tourism and resort projects in the province amounts to more than US$1 billion plus VND11.5 trillion ($555 million).

However, implementation of many of these licensed tourism and resort projects has been delayed, causing a waste of land resources and obstacles in tapping tourism potential. According to a report from the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment, between 2007 and 2011 the provincial authority licensed 30 tourism and resort projects located in a tourism complex on northern Cam Ranh Pennisula in Cam Lam District.

However, due to delays in implementation, only seven of these projects were granted construction licences while only six projects finalised compensation and land-clearance steps.

The provincial authorities of Khanh Hoa have extended the duration for implementation of each project several times, but little progress has been made, according to the department.— VNS
