Ministry, Association Requested to Support Sustainable Coffee Development
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) and local authorities in the central highlands will have to build up a mechanism to support the sustainable development of the coffee industry.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung requested that the mechanism must ensure profits of producers, processors and traders, adding that the agencies must control export prices while directly support local farmers consigning beans as the bean prices slump.
The deputy PM asked the Vicofa to work with the Vietnam Development Bank and commercial banks to receive soft loans from the government’s stimulus package to grow new coffee trees.
Mr Hung urged the MARD to cooperate with provincial authorities and related agencies in setting up a coffee industry development plan by 2020 and with a version to 2030.
Vietnam’s coffee export dropped 31% in value to $461 million in the first quarter of 2010.
