Metro section 2 costs $1.247b

The HCM City Urban Railway Management Board has focused on completing the preparation procedures to officially start the construction project of urban metro No 2 of Ben Thanh-Tham Luong in August 2010.

The new metro route is 11.3 kilometres long, including 9.6 kilometres underground with nine underground stations and one open station from Ben Thanh to Tham Luong. The total investment capital for the metro route No 2 project was posted at $1.247 billion, funded by Asian Development Bank, German Restructure Bank and the European Investment Bank. It is expected that the new metro will be put into operation in 2016.

Previously, the ground breaking ceremony of Long Binh depot (including station, technical maintenance centre and training centre) under Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro rout No 1 took place in Long Binh Ward, Dist 9, HCM City on February 21, 2008. It was considered the first step to carry out Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro route No 1 project, with total investment capital of $1.09 billion dong, in which Japan Bank for International Cooperation offered loans of $905 million, and the rest of domestic counterpart capital. The first metro route was 19.7 kilometres long, connecting Ben Thanh market with Suoi Tien Theme Park that was supposed to be put into operation by 2015.
