Memorandum on nuclear power co-operation signed

The Viet Nam Atomic Energy Commission yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China’s Guangdong Nuclear Power Group to boost co-operation on nuclear power projects between the two countries.

The deal is a conrete step to implement the two sides’ co-operative agreement on applying atomic energy for peaceful purposes signed in December, 2000.

Under the MOU, the Chinese group would provide technical support to Viet Nam, including transferring new science and technology, strengthening information exchange and holding training courses for human resources in Viet Nam.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien, Chinese Deputy Minister of Energy Qian Zhi Ming and relevant agencies and sectors joined the ceremony.

Nuclear power has been considered the feasible solution to meeting increasing demand for power in Viet Nam. The Government approved the investment project to build Ninh Thuan No 1 and Ninh Thuan No2 nuclear power plants with the capacity of 4,000MW last year. As planned, the Ninh Thuan No1 plant would begin its construction in 2014 and complete in 2020.

China is currently known as the country with the most rapid development rate in atomic energy in the world. Dozens of nuclear power turbines have been put into operation in recent years, contributing to addressing the shortage in power for socio-economic development. — VNS
