Maersk Line Working with Vietnam, for Vietnam
As the world’s largest container shipping line, Maersk Line has a fleet of about 500 container vessels, offering comprehensive and reliable global network coverage. Present in more than 125 countries, Maersk Line serves customers through a network of its own offices and third party agents, with more than 16,000 employees employed globally. Advanced e-commerce solutions assure customers of round-the-clock access to accurate, online information on the position of any given container, anywhere in the world.
Maersk Line is part of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group headquartered in Denmark, Copenhagen. In Vietnam, the group was the first organization to successfully obtain a license from the Vietnam government, to set up a 100 percent fully foreign-owned transportation and logistics company ‘Maersk Vietnam Ltd’ in the country.
Today, Maersk Line is the leading shipping company in the country, and has six offices throughout the country: Hanoi in the northern region, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang in the Central area and Can Tho in the west, in addition to the headquarter in Ho Chi Minh City.
Most will agree that the considerable growth Vietnam has seen in the past few years will continue in the future. Peter Smidt-Nielsen, the general director of Maersk Line in Vietnam, shares this view and had this to say, “We have plenty of ambitions to continue investing and growing our business in Vietnam to mutual benefit to Vietnam and our group. As a good example, the A.P.Moller – Maersk Group, through APM Terminals and CMIT, is continuing our own terminal investment in Cai Mep, looking to do more there and elsewhere in Vietnam. In addition, Svitzer, one of the largest tugboat companies in the world, will likely also soon start operating in Vietnam, bringing with it their first class equipment and expertise.”
He continued, “For Maersk Line, we expect shortly to be calling at the new port in Cai Mep with the biggest vessels which have ever entered a Vietnamese port, offering direct service and fast transit times to our customers. We will also continue to invest in Vietnamese talents – 95 percent of our present over 550 jobs are held by locals. We want to know our customers’ business in detail and to serve our customers best possible. To do that we must have the best people, so talent development is crucial for our continued success.”
As part of their business principles, Maersk Line strives to be a good corporate citizen in the countries they operate in. The organization has over the years contributed to the local community through various social projects, focused on supporting and upgrading the lives of children and engaging in disaster relief work. This year alone, Maersk Line has renovated Ham Hiep School in Binh Thuan province and presented scholarships for disadvantaged students of the school, donated blood to support national campaign on helping cancer victims and donated cash and in-kinds to help flood victims in central area amongst many other initiatives.
Another way Maersk Line practices being a good corporate citizen is in the way it works – in the safest and most environmental friendly way there is. In 2009, Maersk Line was awarded the “Sustainable Shipping Operator” for successfully reducing the ecological impact of their operations.
Maersk Line, however, is not the only business unit under the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group that operates in Vietnam. Finally, there is APM Terminals, present through the company CMIT, which is building the Cai Mep International Terminal, slated for completion by end 2010./.
