Laos agrees to defer decision on Xayaburi dam

Laos today (Tuesday) agreed to defer the decision on building the controversial billion-dollar Xayaburi hydropower dam after mounting protests from neighboring countries that the project would seriously damage Lower Mekong River’s mainstream, a source told Tuoitrenews.

Following discussion, the intergovernmental panel of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) has deferred the final decision on the construction of the Xayaburi dam in Laos.

The decision was arrived after Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam protested against the project, citing evidence that the dam would damage biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions of people in the Mekong River Basin.
