Lai Chau hydropower plant project to be started in late 2010

Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister has lately issued Decision No 819/QD-TTg approving the construction project of Lai Chau hydropower plant on June 7, 2010.

The construction works on hydropower plant was expected to start in late 2010, with the first turbine to be put into operation in 2016 and finished in 2017.

The new hydropower plant will not only supply a large output of electricity to the national power grid but also help promote socio-economic development in provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien and throughout the northwest.

Prime Minister has assigned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) to become the main investor for this project, together with other projects of provincial road No 127 and 35 resettlement sites for the local people.
The plant was designed to have three turbines with designed capacity of 400 MW each to be connected to the national grid, which is expected to generate about 4.7 billion KWh per year.

Lai Chau hydropower plant will be built at Nam Hang commune, Muong Te Dist, Lai Chau province.
