Italia Tightening Inspection of Seafood Imported from Vietnam
Italian food safety authorities and economic police launched a campaign to inspect the quality of seafood imported from Vietnam after detection of one swordfish batch infested with mercury.
Food safety inspectors took samples from frozen warehouses of seafood imported from Vietnam in ports Napoli, Foggia and Bari.
The Italian seafood export-import company Marr S.p.a imported three tons of swordfish from Vietnamese Phuoc Hung Seafood Co. located in Ho Chi Minh City; and one part of the fish volume was detected with a content of mercury, 4-5 times higher than the acceptable levels.
Marr S.p.a. Co. distributes swordfish imported from Vietnamese Phuoc Hung Co. to 14 companies across Italia. The companies are recalling the products from supermarkets.
At end-Oct, the Italian authorities detected 100 tons of frozen seafood imported from Vietnam also infested with harmful bacterium E. coli. (Vietnam & World Economy)
