Indonesia imports 700,000 tonnes more of Vietnamese rice

Indonesia has just signed an agreement to import an additional 700,000 tonnes of rice from Vietnam, bringing the total imported volume to 1.2 million tonnes so far this year.

Head of the Indonesian Bureau of Logistics (Bulog) Sutarto Alimoeso said the additional amount will be shipped to Indonesia in early 2012.

Earlier, Bulog agreed to import 500,000 tonnes of Vietnamese rice, which is scheduled to be sent to the country in December.

Sutarto Alimoeso said the two countries have undergone negotiations on raising imported rice volume but are yet to reach an agreement.

He added that Bulog is considering importing rice from India as the country now has an abundant supply of around 2 million tonnes. – VOV
