Hanoi’s first metro line breaks ground
A 12.5-kilometer metro line with a total investment of over VND18 trillion (US$924 million) broke ground in Hanoi Saturday.
Local news website Vietnamnet reported that this is the first of five metro lines to be completed by 2020.
The line starts at Nhon in Tu Liem District and finishes at Hanoi Railway Station. Four kilometers of the line will be underground.
Pham Tuan Son, director of the project Hanoi’s Metro Lines, said a total of 12 stations, four of which are underground, will be set up along the line with automatic ticket barriers.
Once the line is put into operation towards the end of 2015, trains will be able to run along it at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and average speed of 37 kilometers per hour, according to the news source.
The line will help reduce traffic jams in the city, said Nguyen The Thao, chairman of Hanoi’s People’s Committee, at the groundbreaking ceremony. – Thanhnien
