GTel licensed for fixed phone service

The Ministry of Information and Communications has allowed the Global Telecom Corporation (GTel) to set up and supply a fixed phone service in Vietnam.

GTel is the 9th provider of fixed phone services in the country, along with the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), Viettel, EVN Telecom, Sai Gon Postel, FPT Telecom, VTC Group and CMC.

The provider is a Vietnamese – Russian joint venture with 60 percent stake held by the Ministry of Public Security and VimpelCom holding the remainder.

It runs the Beeline mobile network, which was launched last July.

The country currently has 14 million fixed phone subscribers, with 13 million belonging to VNPT
