FAO helps improve quality of farm produce
The Southern Plant Protection Centre under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 14 opened a training course for southern provinces to reduce the risk of pesticide poisoning and deliver safe vegetable products.
According to centre director Ho Van Chien, the US$42,000 project, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is aimed at presenting new inventions in plant protection and measures to raise public awareness of advanced farming in compliance with GAP (Good Agriculture Practice) to ensure food hygiene and safety and produce high-quality rice and vegetables.
It will also provide learners with the latest information on bio-technology, bio-diversification, production in the context of climate change, as well as criteria for recognition from VietGAP, AseanGAP, and Global GAP.
After the course, the learners are expected to become experienced enough to help train local farmers in high-quality rice farming towards VietGAP, AseanGAP, and GlobalGAP criteria.
In order to put the theory into practice, the organizing board has selected five areas to set up cultivation models in My Thanh Bac and My Thanh Nam in Cai Lay district, Long Dinh in Chau Thanh district, and Phu My in Tan Phuoc district, Tien Giang province.
