Economic situation in the five beginning months of 2010

The country’ socio- economy in five beginning months of 2010 is happening in the background of the world’s economy which has not yet fully escaped from the crisis but been gradually stabilised. Detailed outputs of all sectors and fields are as follows:

Agriculture, forestry and fishery

Agriculture

The area for cultivating spring rice in the North was 1,152.6 thousand ha, equal to 100.2% of the same crops last year.

As of mid-May, Provinces in the South harvested 1,913.7 thousand ha of spring rice, accounting for 98.9% of the total cultivated area and equal to 103.8% of the same period in 2009; with an estimated productivity of 6,380 kg/ha, rising by 180 kg/ha, and the yield of 12.4 million tons, increasing by 4.2% as compared to that in last year. The summer-rice seeding area was 1,257.8 thousand ha, equal to 93.5% of the same period last year.

As of mid-May, the country’s maize cultivated area was 706,500 ha, equal to 98.8%; sweet potato: 102,300 ha, equal to 102.9%; cassava: 238,100 ha, equal to 94.9%; peanut: 177,800 ha, equal to 91.4%; soybean: 141,000 ha, equal to 108.6%, and vegetables: 508,800 ha, equal to 101.5% of the same period last year.

According to husbandry survey results at 01/4/2010, the country had 27.3 million heads of pig, rose by 3% as against the same period in 2009; 279.2 million fowls, rose by 8.3%; and a stable number of 3.5 million heads of buffalo and ox.

Forestry

The country’s concentrated forest area in five months was at an estimate of 49,100 ha, rose by 2%. Dispersed planted trees were 89.4 million, equal to100.2%; woodcut production: 1,481,000 m3, rose by 5.9%; firewood production: 12 million m3 rose by 2.3% as against the same period last year. The burnt and damaged area in five months was 3,415.1 ha, rose by 45.2%, of which burnt area was 3,087.1 ha, equal to 2.6 times; felled area was 328 ha, equal to 28.5% as against the same period last year.

Fishery

Generally, in five beginning months of the year, the total estimated fishing production was 1,824,000 tons, rising by 5% as against the same period last year, of which there were 1,391,100 tons of fish, rose by 4.8%; 165,600 tons of shrimp rose by 6.6%. Farmed products gained 814,100 tons, rose by 5.2% as against the same period in 2009. Caught products were 1,009,900 tons, raised by 4.8%, of which sea-caught items were 933,800 tons, rose by 5.3% as against the same period last year.

Industry

The general industrial production value at 1994 constant prices in five months was at an estimate of VND 301.8 trillion, increasing by 13.6% as against the same period last year. Of which, the state sector rose by 9.8% (central industry rose by 13.3%; local industry decreased by 2.8%); the non-state industry rose by 12.4% and the FDI sector by 16.7% (petroleum and gas decreased by 8%, others rose by 20.5%).

Investment

The general realized investment capital from the state budget in five months was VND 45.6 trillion, equaling 36.5% of the yearly estimate, of which, capital under central management was VND 13.9 trillion, equal to 37.1% and capital under local management was VND 31.7 trillion, equaling 36.2% of the yearly estimate.

The attracted FDI from the beginning of the year to 20/5/2010 was at an estimate of USD 7.5 billion, equaling 77% of that in the same period in 2009. Of which, the registered capital of 360 newly licensed projects was USD 7.1 billion, although decreased by 14.7% by the number of FDI projects but rose 40.1% by capital as compared with the same period last year; the additional registered capital of 107 times of projects licensed from previous years was USD 403 million. Realised FDI in five months was estimated at USD 4.5 billion, growing by 7.1% as against the same period last year.

The attraction of ODA funds through signed agreements with sponsors were USD 497 million, including USD 454 million of loans; USD 43 million of non-refundable aids. The ODA reimbursements in five months were estimated at USD 844 million, equal to 35% of the year plan, including USD 767 million of loans; and USD 77 million of non-refundable aids.

Government revenues and expenditures

As estimated, total Government revenues from beginning of the year to 15/5/2010 was equal to 38.3% of the yearly estimate, of which domestic revenues accounted for 38.4%; revenues from crude oil was equal to 33.3%; revenues from import-export: 41.4%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from the state-owned enterprises equaled to 41.5%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil): 33.8%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes: 35.8%; taxes imposed on high-income persons: 37.1%; petroleum fees: 38.2%; and other fees: 34.1% of the yearly estimate.

As estimated, total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/5/2010 was equal to 33,8% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development accounted for 35.8%; for economic and social development, national defense and security: 33.8%; for paying debts and aids: 38.1%.

Trade, prices & services

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services

The total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in five months at current prices were at an estimate of VND 620.6 trillion, rose by 26.9% as compared with the same period last year, the growth was 16.7%, if the factor of rising price was excluded. Of the total retailed sales of consumer goods and services in five months, the trade business gained VND 489.2 trillion, taking 78.9% of the total and increasing by 27.5%; the hotel and restaurant: VND 68.4 trillion, taking 11% and increasing by 23.5%; the service: VND 56.6 trillion, taking 9.1% and increasing by 25.2%; the tourist: VND 6.5 trillion, taking 1% and increasing by 32.9% as compared to the same period last year.

Exports-Imports

The general export turnover in five months was at an estimate of USD 25.8 billion, growing by 12.6% as against the same period in 2009. Of which, the domestic economic sector gained USD 12 billion, rose by 0.4%; the FDI sector (including crude oil): USD 13.8 billion, rising by 25.9%, if crude oil was excluded, this sector’s export turnover was USD 11.7 billion rose by 39.1%. If the factor of gold re-exportation in this year and last year was excluded, the five months’ export rose by 23% as against the same period last year.

The general import turnover in five months was at an estimate of USD 31.2 billion, showing a rise of 29.8% as compared to the same period in 2009, of which the domestic economic sector gained USD 18.2 billion, rose by 18.1%; and the FDI sector with USD 13 billion rose by 50.5%.

Trade deficit in five months was at an estimate of USD 5.4 billion, equal to 20.8% of the export turnover.

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The consumer price index (CPI) in 5/2010 saw an increase of 0.27% as against the previous month. It rose by 9.05% as against same period last year; and by 4.55% as against December 2009. Average CPI in five months rose by 8.76% as against that in the same period in 2009.

May’s gold price rose by 1.91% as against the previous month; decreased by 2.71% as against 12/2009 and rose by 35.62% as against the same period in 2009. In May USD price reduced by 0.63% as against the previous month, and rose by 0.58% as against 12/2009, and by 5.86% as against the same period in 2009.

Carriage of passengers and cargos

Passenger carriage in 5 beginning months was estimated at 954.4 million participants, increasing by 13.4% and 40.9 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 15% as against the same period last year. Of which, the central transport gained 14.7 million passengers, rose by 11.3% and 10 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 14.5%; the local transport gained 939.7 million passengers, increasing by 13.9% and 30.8 billion passengers-kilometers, increasing by 15.9%. Among transport branches, the land gained 873.1 million participants, going up by 14.2% and 29.7 billion passengers-kilometers up by 14.1%; the river 68.8 million participants up by 3% and 1.4 billion passengers-kilometers up by 0.5%; the sea 2.7 million participants up by 4.1% and 171.5 million passengers-kilometers, increasing by 5.3 %; the rail 4.5 million participants up by 3% and 1.6 billion passengers-kilometers rose by 2.9%; the aviation 5 million participants up by 29.6% and 7.9 billion passengers-kilometers rose by 25.6%.

The volume of cargos carried in five months was at an estimate of 285.5 million tons, going up by 11.8% and 80.6 billion tons-kilometers, up by 9.5% as against the same period last year. Of which, the domestic transport gained 265.9 million tons, increased by 12.3% and 22.5 billion tons-kilometers up by 10.2%; the overseas transport achieved 19.6 million tons, increased by 10.9% and 58.1 billion tons-kilometers up by 8.9%. Among transport branches, the land gained 212.7 million tons, going up by 12.7% and 11.1 billion tons-kilometers up by 12.1%; the river 48.3 million tons up by 5.1% and 7.7 billion tons-kilometers up by 2.1%; the sea 21.1 million tons up by 20% and 59.9 billion tons-kilometers up by 10%; the rail 3.4 million tons up by 1.4% and 1.6 billion tons-kilometers up by 4.6%.

Communication

As estimated, there were 18.5 million new telephone subscribers in 5 months, rose by 21.9% as against the same period in 2009, of which 986,200 were desk telephone subscribers, decreased by 24.1% and 17.5 million mobile phone subscribers, going up by 26.2%. To end of 5/2010, the number of telephone subscribers over the country was at an estimate of 148.9 million, increasing by 54.3% as compared with the same period last year, including million desk telephone subscribers, up by 30% and 128.9 million mobile phone subscribers, up by 58.9%.

Broadband internet subscribers over the country to end of 5/2010 were estimated at 3.5 million, increased by 41.2% as against the same period last year. Internet users to end of 5/2010 were 24.6 million, rose by 14.6% compared to the same period last year.

The total postal and communicational service net income in five months was estimated at VND 46.2 trillion, rose by 40.9% as against the same period last year.

International visitors to Viet Nam

International visitors to Viet Nam in 5 months were estimated at 2,223,800, increasing by 37.7% as compared to the same period last year. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 1,410,100, up by 43%; for business purposes: 447,200, up by 56.7%; for visiting relatives: 249,700, up by 5.9%. Visitors came by aviation were 1,807,700, rose by 34.3% by sea: 19,000, decreased by 43%; and by land 397,100 rose by 68.7% as against the same period last year.
