Each Vietnamese citizen owes a debt of 15.m dong for Vinashin: NA Member

“We received reliable information and data from the banks related to the case of troubled Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), asserting that the debts of Vinashin were estimated at up to 120 trillion dong, not just the 86 trillion dong as reported,” Le Quang Binh, Chair of the Committee of Defense – Security of Vietnam National Assembly said in the discussions of the socio-economic development group of National Assembly on October 22.

At the discussions, there were many questions over the government’s report and answer of government Inspectorate to find full responsibility for the troubled Vinashin.

The NA Committee of Defence and Security’s Le Quang Binh said that somebody told to him that after the Central Inspection Commission announced the conclusion of 45 cases, including Vinashin, banks sent the documents of debt repayments of Vinashin to an authorised agency and gathered the figure with an outstanding loan of about 120 trillion dong.

Binh said: “Of course, the figure of above 120 trillion dong is not official, but the data that the National Assembly Congress that was provided by the government is such a right?”

Binh fiercely requested the government of Vietnam to propose a clear explanation of the difference in these data and publicly confirm the accuracy of the data with the National Assembly. So that, the National Assembly could have accurate information to answer voters.

According to vice-chair of the National Assembly’s Committee on Social Affairs Bui Si Loi’s calculation, if with such a huge debt, each Vietnamese citizen will suffer an average debt burden of about 1.5 million dong for Vinashin.

Vietnamese police arrested four former officials of Vinashin, as the government extended its investigation into financial difficulties at the state-owned company.

In July, Chair Pham Thanh Binh was suspended from his post at Vinashin, as the government investigated into financial difficulties at the state- controlled company, which almost collapsed under 86 trillion dong ($4.4 billion under the government’s data) of debts. – Thanhnien
