Craft Week 2010 Promises Rich Potential

Hanoi Craft Week 2010 will be held from August 4th to 9th, 2010 in the Friendship Cultural Palace, 91 Tran Hung Dao Str. by Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade.

This is an important event to honor Hanoi – a thousand years of culture and the National Tourism Year 2010. Vietnam Economic News’ reporter spoke with Luu Tien Long, the director of Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade and the director of the exhibition organization board.

It is the second Craft Week in 2010. Could you please tell us the differences between the two Craft Weeks?

Since 2009, Craft Week has been thought of as an annual event by the Department of Industry and Trade. This year, a number of great events will be held among which the 1000th Anniversary of Thang Long Hanoi and the National Tourism Year are the most outstanding. Therefore we are aware that Hanoi Craft Week 2010 is not a normal exhibition but a good opportunity to honor “Hanoi’s thousand years of quintessence”. The exhibition can be considered a national event. In the exhibition, diverse craft products by the best craftsmen will be displayed. Several workshops on Hanoi craft villages’ potential and development will be organized. In the workshops, experts will discuss traditional value and tourism potential of these villages. In addition, there are also other activities such as the gift model design contest for 1000 Year Thang Long – Hanoi Anniversary, fashion shows of craft jewelry entitled “Traditional Materials – Modern Design” and a tour through five outstanding traditional villages including Bat Trang Pottery, Ha Thai Lacquer Paintings and Phu Vinh Bamboo and Rattan Craft… On this occasion, the organizers will create favorable condition for the villages which take part in the exhibition with free showrooms and access to foreign and domestic craft product distributors. The products which win the prizes of gift model design contest for 1000 years Thang Long – Hanoi Anniversary will be supported to register copyrights.

There are hundreds of craft villages in Hanoi. What are criteria for choosing five villages in the above tour?

As you know, there are more than 300 craft villages all over the country. After Ha Tay having been merged into Hanoi, the number of traditional craft villages in Hanoi considerably increases. Therefore, the most important criteria are long-standing history and product’s characteristics and potential in the market. The product of the villages must express “Hanoi’s thousand years of quintessence”. These villages must be agreed to be the destination of tourists by Hanoi People’s Committee. Another criterion is time and route order. People in the villages have to be trained on behavior culture.

Five craft village tour will be held to respond the National Tourism Year and make tourists experience cultural tradition and value of Hanoi’s craft villages.

What is your expectation in the Hanoi Craft Week 2010?

We hope that the exhibition will feature about 500 craft villages and 10 thousand tourists. Especially, the event will attract numerous domestic and foreign travel agents to look for partners. I want to emphasize that Hanoi Craft Week 2010 not only functions an exhibition but also promises to open a new potential market for Hanoi craft village’s products and strengthen tourism and cultural development in Hanoi – a thousand years of culture./.
