CPI in first six months soars by 4.78pct

The General Statistical Office (GSO) has said that the consumer price index (CPI) in Jan-June rose by 4.78 percent against that of December 2009, and up 8.75 percent year-on-year.

The CPI index in June increased by 0.22 percent over the previous month, but up 8.69 percent in comparison with the same period of last year.

Ten out of 11 groups of commodities saw a slight jump, ranging from 0.01-0.62 percent. The group of drinks and tobacco saw the highest increase at 0.62 percent, followed by postal and telecommunication services of 0.49 percent, household equipment and appliances of 0.48 percent and the other services of 0.46 percent.

Especially, the CPI index in group of housing and construction materials that had seen the highest rise last month dramatically slumped to the lowest due to sharp declines in prices of houses, steel and construction materials.

In June, the two groups of restaurant and catering services and postal and telecommunication reversed to increase slightly after a long time of falling. However, the group of food still slipped 0.83 percent.

The gold price in June rose 3.09 percent against the previous month, resulting in a slight jump of gold price in the first six months of 0.3 percent against last December, and a year-on-year increase of 39.03 percent.

On the contrary, the US dollar price in markets in June continued dropping by 0.17 percent month on month. Therefore, in the first six months of this year, the US dollar price surged by 0.41 percent against December 2009 and up 7.67 percent against the same period of last year.
