Construction material sector to boost coal demand in Vietnam

With booming housing construction industry, coal demand in Vietnam will surge at a CAGR of 8% during 2010-2014, RNCOS identified.

According to our research report “Vietnam Mining Sector Analysis”, construction materials, such as steel, ceramic, tiles, bricks, etc. are in huge demand in Vietnam due to booming housing construction sector in the country. Recent growth in the residential and commercial construction sectors has worked as a catalyst in coal demand growth in the industry. As majority of the Vietnamese do not have their own houses, the country possess huge potential for the residential real-estate market. We anticipate that the demand for coal in construction material industry will grow at CAGR of over 8% during 2010-2014.

Besides the construction sector, the power industry has strongly contributed to the overall coal consumption in the country. The power sector has emerged as the most dominating coal consumer in Vietnam. In 2009, around 39% of total coal consumed in the country was accounted by the power sector alone. The sector is expected to generate enormous coal demand during our forecast period and will further widen coal demand-supply gap.

As per our study, at the production level, developments have given appropriate response to the demand till now. Domestic productions have comfortably been surpassing local demand and the country has been exporting huge amount of coal. However, limited coal reserves will create a wide gap in the demand-supply mechanism in future. In fact, regulators have already proposed coal imports, which are expected to start from 2012 onwards. The condition will become even more severe, if authorities continued to overlook new reserves discovery and exploitations.

Our report “Vietnam Mining Sector Analysis” is an outcome of extensive research and conceptual analysis of the Vietnamese coal industry potential. It facilitates information/statistics on coal reserves, production, consumption, import prospects & exports development historical, current & future projected trends. Besides, the report provides coal demand forecasts for prominent sectors, including power, cement, construction material, and living fuel. Brief research overview of renewable potentials (wind, photovoltaic, and nuclear power) has also been included to provide a balanced research outlook of the Vietnamese coal industry.
