Australia increases ODA for Vietnam next year

The Australian Government on Thursday announced official development assistance (ODA) of A$137.9 million to Vietnam in 2011-12, up 8.2% against the 2010-11 estimated budget for the country.

“The increase demonstrates Australia’s long-term commitment to assist Vietnam to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development,” Australia’s Ambassador to Vietnam Allaster Cox said in a statement.

Australia’s aid program will assist Vietnam to achieve its objectives in different areas, including human resource development, economic integration and infrastructure development.

The aid, managed by the Australian Agency for International Development, also gives Vietnam support in environmental sustainability, such as water supply and sanitation, climate change and agricultural research.

In addition, Australia’s support will include the design of the Cao Lanh Bridge which will deliver significant economic and social benefits by improving transport access for residents in the Mekong Delta region. – SGT
