Asem Forum on Sustainable Food Security opens in Vietnam

A forum on sustainable food security under the Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) framework opened in the Vietnamese’s southern HCM City on Monday, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The event, co-organised by Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), attracted more than 60 experts of Asem member countries and representatives of the International Rice Research Institute and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

Vietnamese deputy minister of MARD Bui Ba Bong said the forum provides an opportunity for Asem members to share their experiences and exchange measures to secure food supply.

At this event, the participants focused on assessing impacts of global economic downturn on food security as well as challenges to food security including the increase of food prices, epidemics and reduction of agriculture land and water resources.

The participants also discussed ways to enhance the cooperation among Asem member countries to improve food security by accelerating the transfer of advanced technology for agricultural development and strengthening public-private partnership.
