APM Terminals opens Vietnam’s largest container terminal
The Saigon-based port facility will be the first in Vietnam with a capacity to handle the world’s largest container vessels of 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The company has already stated that Maersk Line is among it’s potential clients.
According to industry sources, Vietnamese ports are experiencing strong growth in the number of handled containers.
This led to the APM Terminals port joint venture with Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT).
“The JV has great expectations,” said Michael Them Rasmussen, General Director of CMIT.
Rasmussen added that Asia is a growth market, and that Vietnam has realised that more ports are needed.
“The government has wanted an expansion in order to strengthen the country’s competitiveness. It is important to the development that goods may easily and quickly get in and out,” commented Rasmussen.
Maersk Line currently makes use of the PSA International’s terminal, however the company is reportedly open to evaluating CMIT facilities if the company offers competitive pricing and quality.
