31pct of Vietnamese population use Internet
Cimigo, a market research company, has recently announced NetCitizens 2011 report on the use and development situation of Internet in Vietnam.
The report was based on the survey over 3,000 Internet users in six cities including Hanoi, HCM City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Nha Trang and Can Tho.
According to the survey results, 31 percent of Vietnam’s population has accessed Internet, of which, about two third has made daily Internet accesses (averaging at more than two hours per day).
Notably, amongst Internet users, about 40 percent have accessed Internet by mobile phone or smartphone, mostly in young people.
Those at the age of between 15 and 24 accessing Internet by using mobile phones showed a two-fold higher ratio than those aged between 35 and 49. Internet access by mobile phones in the North (mainly in Hanoi and Hai Phong) was higher than that in Central and South.
The main purpose of Internet users is to collect information and news. Some preferred online newspapers are Dan Tri, VnExpress, 24H and Tuoi Tre.
Google is the favourite site for search and research operations. Entertainment items such as music listening and music download, watching movies and playing games are also major activities.
The sites for auction and online shopping have not been used frequently. Yahoo is a priority for the users in communication activities such as email and chat.
For blog and social network, some most popular sites are Facebook, Zingme and Yahoo 360plus.
NetCitizens report is being made every year and this is the second year. In a report in 2010, the percentage of Vietnam’s population making Internet access was 26 percent. – DVT
