Vietnam’s auto and motorbike imports surge in Q1


The country’s import spending of auto was $734 million in the first quarter of 2011, up 20.3 percent year-on-year, according to data of general Statistical Office of Vietnam (GSO).

In which, the import of CBUs cost $262 million with 14,800 units, increasing 154.8 percent in volume and 162.2 percent in value compared with the same period of 2010.

In March alone, the auto import was $275 million, including $100 million spent on importing 5,000 CBUs.

Also, import of motorbikes in Jan-March cost $248 million, jumping 191.1 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, that of complete motorbikes accounted for $36 million with 24,200 units, up 27.1 percent in value but down 1 percent in volume against the year earlier. In this month, the country imported 4,500 complete motorbikes worth $5 million.

Vietnam also spent $129 million importing other transportation means and components in Q1 of 2011, down 42.8 percent.
