Vietnamese property investors look to profit from land appreciation… and sparrow’s nests
Land plots in the Can Gio district in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam are being hunted by investors hoping to make a “double investment”.
While hoping to profit from rising land prices, the investors are planning to breed sparrows on the land, that is believed to have an ecosystem suitable for breeding this precious bird due to its proximity to forests and water. Bird’s nests are currently priced at US$1500-2000 per kilo and if successful, the investors may have incomes of several billion Vietnamese Dong per month.
Meanwhile, having realized the high demand from investors, many families in the Can Gio district, are joining forces with the companies that provide sparrow breeding technology to offer to sell landed property here.
Having purchased two land plots with the total area of 4000 square meters in Tam Thon Hiep Commune in the Can Gio district, Pham Sinh, representing an investment group from Sydney, says he has to pay 2.2-2.6 million dong (US$106-126) per square meters. This means that the land alone costs him 10 billion dong (US$485,554.75).
Speaking to Vietnamnet, Sinh said, “with the favourable ecosystem, we plan to breed sparrows here,” Sinh said, when asked why he bought the land.
I have learned about the models of breeding sparrows in different places. Many people succeed with their breeding in the inner city, therefore, I believe that Can Gio is the right place to invest in.”
Local families are also involved in sparrow breeding. Pham Trong Duc, a senior official of the Can Gio district’s authorities says there are 17 households in the commune, which have registered the sparrow breeding. Also, there are nearly 100 households who breed sparrows spontaneously. They asked for permission from the local authorities to build houses in which to live, but the households have been breeding sparrows inside their houses.
Duc says he has successfully persuaded nine sparrow breeding households to open their business model for the district’s surveying. One of the households reportedly collects 30 kilos of bird’s nests a month, earning 1.2 billion dong (US$58,266).
Sparrows have been bred in a trial basis in the locality for two years. The impacts on the environment and other problems will be recorded before the local district proposes the city’s authorities to expand the area for breeding sparrows. – Sttoxplus.com
