Vietnam to see growth in mobile internet users, Nielsen says

Only 2 out of five users in Vietnam access internet via mobile phones, the lowest rate in the Southeastern Asia region. But, the country will see an expected blossom in number of mobile internet users within 12 months.
This statement was revealed initial findings from market research firm Nielsen’s inaugural Southeast Asia Digital Consumer Report that will be announced officially on September 30.

According to Nielsen, it will take time for mobile internet being accessed by Vietnamese users, but in the coming time, the number of users will likely increase rapidly. Currently, only 41% of internet users access via mobile phones. The ratio is expected to be raised to 75% in 12 months.

Citing the report, only 21% of Vietnamese users own internet-accessible handsets, which will be 46% in one more year.

“Despite spending capacity is decreasing due to inflation pressure, Vietnamese people still like spending in technology and maintaining continuous connection. Vietnam’s digital technique market is quite small against developed economies ,but most of latest models of smart phones are being searched and purchased by Vietnamese consumers”, Darin Williams, Managing Director of Nielsen Vietnam said.

However, Darin warned, if the trend is continued, some issues will emerge. Mobile telecommunication infrastructure should be more developed. Service providers need to research and pay more attention to precise experiences of the users. The more importance, according to Darin, is that prices of smart phones should be lower to help majority of consumers accept and user mobile internet.

“It is assumed that all aforementioned terms are met, we forecast there will be an abnormal increase in load of using mobile internet in next 2 years”, he expected.

Nielsen report also pointed out the tendency of digital content using of Vietnamese people. Accordingly, 96% of internet users have accessed at least one social website; 79% clicked “like” or watched a brand name, a company or a famous individual via websites, 10% higher than average level of the Southeastern Asia region.

Vietnamese internet users also are easily affected by information found on social websites. 58% of surveyed users said that posted information was reliable and 81% believed that using social websites is like a resource to give shopping decisions.

“Close binding between internet users and online content will be opportunity for advertising and marketing operations…”, Darin gave his point of view. – Vietbiz24
