Vietnam Sets Up National Steering Committee for 1st Nuclear Power Plants
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on May 4 approved the establishment of a national steering committee for the country’s two first nuclear power plants in the central province of Ninh Thuan.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai is assigned to be the head of the steering committee while Ministers of Industry and Trade, of Science and Technology and of Construction, chairman of the National Assembly Science, Technology and Environment and chairman of Ninh Thuan province are vice heads.
The steering committee is responsible for guiding, checking and supervising the construction and the operation of the nuclear power plants.
Last November, Vietnam’s national assembly approved construction of two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW in Ninh Thuan province. The construction is slated to start in 2014.
The country chose Russian Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation to build the two first reactors and is seeking partners to build other reactors.
Currently several prestigious industrial corporations including Toshiba, Hitachi, and Mitsubishi of Japan and Avera of France, are advancing their interest in nuclear power projects in Vietnam. – Chinhphu
