Vietnam ready for 17th ASEAN Summit

The 17th ASEAN Summit, scheduled to take place in Hanoi from October 28-30, will review the bloc’s achievements in 2010 and discuss measures to promote cooperation with ASEAN partners in 2011.

The information was given by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dao Viet Trung, at a press conference on the summit in Hanoi on October 20. He said the summit will focus discussions on topics such as accelerating the building of the ASEAN Community and implementation of the ASEAN Charter, the development of diplomatic relations and ASEAN’s centrality, and sustainable development to deal with global challenges.

In addition to ASEAN State and Government leaders, the summit will be attended by leaders of ASEAN’s eight partners including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.

Trung said all preparations have been completed and that Vietnam will make every effort to ensure security for the summit. – VOV
