Vietnam President Urges Economic Links at 17th APEC Summit
Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet emphasized the increase of economic links among the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members would be vital to maintain its role in the region and the world.
President Triet made the statement at the 17th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting taking place in Singapore November 14-15.
At the two-day summit, APEC leaders agreed to boost the economic links via main measures including trade freedom, improvement of business environment and expand the border-across transport network.
The summit wrapped up on late Nov 15 with adopting a joint declaration themed “Sustaining growth, Connecting the region†and a statement by APEC leaders on “A new growth paradigm for a connected Asia-Pacific in the 21st century.â€Â
On the sideline of the APEC summit, Triet held bilateral meetings with leaders from China, Russia, the U.S., Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Chile, Peru and the Republic of Korea, received leaders of the world’s giant such as Microsoft, Siemens.
He also attended the first ASEAN-U.S. Leaders’ Meeting held in Singapore on Nov 15.
In 2008, trade between ASEAN and the U.S. reached US$178 billion.
Asia has become the most ideal destination of American investors, with total capital of US$153 billion last year. (Chinhphu.vn)
