Vietnam PM Urges to Revise Cement Development Planning

The Vietnamese Prime Minister has urged the Ministry of Construction to revise the national cement development planning to tackle the country’s foreseeable huge cement surplus in the next years, the government said.
The ministry is drafting a new development planning for the cement industry until 2015 and with a vision for future developments through 2025 as the country is forecast to see a cement glut which will come earlier than the estimate of the latest approved planning until 2010 and a vision through 2020.

The cement industry satisfied the domestic demand for the first time last year after many years facing cement shortages, the government said, adding that Vietnam had 97 cement production lines with a combined designed capacity of 57.4 million tons in late 2009.
Cement producers in Vietnam are estimated to operate 13 more production lines with total designed capacity of 11.7 million in 2010, resulting in the country’s cement surplus of two million tons.
The country’s cement surplus will be much higher in the following years as more licensed production lines will be put in use.
In late 2009, the PM approved the MoC’s proposal on suspending licensing new cement projects through 2020 in order to handle the situation.
On Jan. 5, the ministry instructed localities nationwide to stop registering new cement projects in line with the PM’s decision. (www.chinhphu.vn)
