Vietnam M&A Forum opens to applause

Vietnam M&A Forum 2011 officially opened this morning at Ho Chi Minh City’s White Palace Convention Centre, attracting more than 400 delegates, senior leaders, investors, experts and government officers.

Co-organised by Vietnam Investment Review and AVM Vietnam, the third Vietnam M&A Forum has become a key channel for investors to seek M&A opportunities and also a forum to discuss about experience and legal framework.
Nguyen The Phuong, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI), said at the forum ceremony that “M&A laws in Vietnam still have shortcomings that need to be addressed in order to create a synchronous, transparent, specific, clear and consistent legal framework. At this request, the annual M&A Vietnam Forum is helpful and meaningful to both businesses and state management agencies.”
“The MPI highly appreciated this initiative and believed that the forum this year would look back at M&A activities in 2010 and predict trends in the years to come. It will also help point out advantages and challenges, draw out useful lessons on M&A as well as thoroughly discuss legal issues, in order to make specific proposals to state management agencies so that they can complete the legal framework and facilitate the M&A activities in Vietnam.”
VIR’s editor-in-chief Nguyen Anh Tuan said this was a good time for discussing M&A activities in Vietnam as they were expected to boom this year.
“As you may know, M&A deals in Vietnam have been on a sharp rise in the last few years in Vietnam and M&As have proved an effective investment channel for both domestic and foreign enterprises in the country,” said Tuan.
The forum will have two sessions with the morning session focusing on overall picture of M&As in Vietnam and relevant legal frameworks. The afternoon’s session will address experiences, M&A strategies and post M&A issues.
Speakers and panelists in the Vietnam M&A Forum 2011 include leaders and senior experts from the MPI, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, State Securities Commission, national and international specialists in banking and finance, insurance, securities and real estate. Among those, significant speakers are Mayooran Elalingam from Deutsche Bank, Nitil Jaiswal from Bloomberg, Oliver Massmann from Duane Morris and David Do from Vigroup.
According to PriceWaterhouseCoopers, there were 345 M&A deals in Vietnam last year, with the transaction value of $1.7 billion, or 65 per cent increase against 2009.
During 2009-2010, Vietnam M&A forums were a great success with the attendance of more than 1,000 senior leaders of enterprises in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. – VIR
