Vietnam Gains High-Tech Headway with Israel

Pham Gia Tuc, Deputy Chairman and Secretary General of VCCI, asserted that the workshop was aimed at deepening integration into the regional and global economy, and that diversifying foreign relations has significantly boosted ties with the Middle East where Israel is a key partner, particularly in the field of high-tech. He continued by saying that this a good time for businesses in Vietnam and Israel to boost investment cooperation.

The VCCI explained that bilateral trade between Vietnam and Israel went up from US$144 million to US$162.9 million between 2007 and 2008, but saw a decrease to US$150 million in 2009. Vietnam trades footwear, coffee, rice, seafood, wood products, cashews and numerous other products with Israel and buys machinery, equipment, fertilizers and many other products.
Dinh Xuan Luu, Vietnam’s ambassador to Israel, said that Israel has achieved a high-level of development, particularly in the areas of information, national defense and bio technologies, which are key factors toward Vietnam building itself into an industrialized, modernized nation.
Additionally, the forum was an opportunity for Israeli businesses to understand and make the most of Vietnam’s market and the ASEAN region, with almost 500 million consumers due to the fact that Vietnam is the President of ASEAN in 2010, said Dinh Xuan Luu.
Israeli Ambassador to Vietnam Amnon Efrat related, “In recent years, we have seen important progress in trade ties between Vietnam and Israel, with a full range of agreements such as the Financial Protocol, the Dual Tax Avoidance Agreement (which recently took effect) and the Waterway Transport Agreement (in final negotiation stage). Moreover, the fact that the Vietnam-Israel Chamber of Commerce was recently established is another piece of conclusive evidence that shows the prospering friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
At the forum, Israeli groups and companies shared with Vietnamese businesses products in areas such as water resources, wastewater treatment, dairy cow breeding, agricultural preservation, telecommunications, environmental management and many others.
