Vietnam Dec auto sales up 59% year/year

Auto sales in Vietnam surged 59 percent last month from a year earlier to 15,065 units, slowing from an annual rise of 132 percent in November, an industry report said.

Sales by 16 auto makers in Vietnam rose 7 percent in 2009 from 2008 to 119,460 vehicles, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association said in a report released on Thursday.

Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp, the top seller, sold 4,183 vehicles in December, up 59 percent from a year earlier. Accumulated sales in 2009 rose 23 percent to 30,110 vehicles.

Vietnam’s economy grew 6.9 percent in the quarter to Dec. 31, its fastest pace in nearly two years, while full-year growth was 5.32 percent, the slowest since 1999.

The government expects growth this year of 6.5 percent. (Reuters)
