Vietnam car sales fall 18pct on year in August, down 8pct on month

Vietnam’s car sales fell 18 percent in August from a year earlier, the second straight month of decline, industry data showed Friday.

Compared with the previous month, August car sales fell 8 percent, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

A total of 8,671 cars were sold in the domestic market last month, compared with 10,555 cars sold a year earlier, the association said.

The data include sales of both domestically produced and imported vehicles.

According to government data issued last month, Vietnam imported 30,935 assembled cars, valued at $572 million, in the first eight months of this year, down 23 percent on year by volume and 11 percent lower by value.

Imports of cars and car parts were worth $1.817 billion in the January to August period, up 14.8 percent on year.
