Vietnam, Cambodia Boost Trade and Investment

After being approved by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, the 2010 High Quality Vietnamese Product and Export Fair took place from April 3-7 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This fair was organized by An Giang province in coordination with the High-quality Vietnamese Products Business Club and the Business Studies and Assistance Center (BSA) in order to boost border trade cooperation and facilitate trade between Vietnam and Cambodia. Vietnam Economic News’ Ngoc Long summed up the opinions of high-ranking officials and businesspeople from the two countries about cooperationĂ‚ opportunities.
Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang

In 2009, trade between Vietnam and Cambodia decreased by 18.7 percent when compared with figures from 2008, which totaled about US$1.3 billion. In the first two months of 2010, the two countries exchanged US$264.7 million worth of products, which was an increase of 54.8 percent when compared to trade during the same period in 2009. The two countries expect bilateral trade to reach US$2 billion in 2010.

The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade have agreed to organize the 2010 High Quality Vietnamese Product and Export Fair in Phnom Penh. The fair exposed Cambodian people and residents from Phnom Penh to various kinds of high quality products made in Vietnam. The fair took place before the Chol Chnam Thmay festival and attracted lots of visitors. This was a good opportunity for Vietnamese and Cambodian companies to meet and discuss ways to increase cooperation to contribute to strengthening relations and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. I highly appreciate An Giang Province’s efforts to coordinate with the High-quality Vietnamese Products Business Club and the BSA to make this fair a success. On behalf of the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and relevant authorities from Cambodia for their active support.

Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh

The 2010 High Quality Vietnamese Product and Export Fair is believed to contribute to strengthening the friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia and boosting bilateral trade. It will give Vietnamese companies new opportunities to invest in Cambodia. Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akeah Mohasena Baday Hun Sen is determined to develop the border areas in order to promote peace and prosperity. Therefore, the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce has many programs to promote trade with neighboring countries, especially Vietnam.

Many plans have been worked out to develop the Cambodian economy, promote trade, prepare for the new Trade Law, and approach foreign markets in the region and the world. For companies that are doing business and investing in Cambodia, they will be legally assisted when they participate in trade promotion activities. In May 2010, we will send a delegation to Long An province to investigate possibilities for trade cooperation.
An Giang province’s People’s Committee chairman Lam Minh Chieu

This was the ninth fair of this kind in Cambodia. In previous years, the fair attracted a lot of Cambodian visitors. This year, the fair was an important part of An Giang province’s export promotion program for 2010. Following this fair, the Tinh Bien International Fair will be organized in May. The 2010 High Quality Vietnamese Product and Export Fair gave border-crossing economic zones in An Giang Province a chance to boost trade between Vietnam and Cambodia. I hope that the fair will help more Vietnamese companies make a mark in the Cambodian market. I also hope that Vietnamese products will continue to win the trust of Cambodian consumers.

ABC Bakery general director Kao Sieu Luc

This was the ninth time I have taken part in a fair like this. Participation in the fair allowed me to learn about the Cambodian market in order to expand the distribution network of ABC Bakery. I have opened two distribution centers in Cambodia and after this fair is over, I will open one more in the next several months.

An Giang Trade and Investment Promotion Center director Nguyen Ngoc Em

The 2010 High Quality Vietnamese Product and Export Fair was larger in size when compared with similar events that have previously taken place. Participants included 15-16 companies from An Giang province. Following the guidelines provided by the Vietnamese and Cambodian governments, companies from both countries have increased bilateral border trade. In my opinion, the two business communities can increase cooperation, not only in the field of trade, but also in other fields including construction material production, agricultural product processing, transportation services and tourism.
Humteav Oknha Keo Maly, general director of Keo Maly Group (Cambodia)

We have partners in many other countries but we prefer to do business with the Vietnamese people because we love Vietnam. We have land and capital and we want to cooperate with Vietnamese companies because they have experience and good techniques, especially in the field of agricultural production.
