US$400 million to build Trung Son hydroelectric power plant
Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, Nguyen Van Giau, and World Bank (WB) Director in Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa, on June 28 signed a loan agreement for the Trung Son hydroelectric power project.
Accordingly, the WB will provide Vietnam with a US$330 million loan through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The loan has a 27-year term, including a grace period of six years.
The project is aimed at providing low-cost, safe, and environmentally-friendly electricity for the country.
Located in western Thanh Hoa province, the Trung Son power plant has a design capacity of 260 Mw and a total output of 1.55 GWh every year.
Once completed, the US$411.72 million power plant will help control floods in the lower section of the Ma River and reduce green house gas emissions.
Ms. Kwakwa said the project will help diversify the electricity supply resources in Vietnam and ensure the country’s energy security.
This is part of Vietnam’s plan to develop resources of low-cost electricity to meet its demand for energy and alleviate climate change by cutting a million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions every year.
The Trung Son Hydroelectric Power Project is invested by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and is scheduled for completion in 2017. – VOV
