Trung Nam building hydropower plants

The Hochiminh City-based Trung Nam Group yesterday began construction of two hydropower plants with a total capacity of 46 MW in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.

Krong No 2 and Krong No 3 hydropower stations will supply around 170 million-kilowatt hours of electricity for the national grid a year, according to the company.

Trung Nam will invest nearly 1.2 trillion dong in the two stations covering 375 hectares along the Dak Krong No River, a tributary of the SerePok River in Da Tong Village, Dam Rong District, Lam Dong.

Krong No 2 and Krong No 3 are part of a hydropower development scheme in Lam Dong Province in the 2005-2010 period, the group said.

The company will build dam in a section of the Dak Krong No River to create a reservoir able to hold 25 million cubic meters of water. The reservoir will also help control annual floods and irrigate farms in the lower reaches of the river.

The group said it would develop an ecotourism site in the project area in addition to the existing upstream Chu Yang Sin national park and Bidoup Nui Ba Wildlife Park.

Trung Nam started business in Hochiminh in 2004 and has since been active in the fields of construction, real property and power. The group was also the developer of Dong Nai 2 hydropower plant in Di Linh District, Lam Dong Province.

Dong Nai 2 capitalised at two trillion dong could begin generation in early 2012 with a designed capacity of 70 MW, according to the group.

The company said it was carrying out several other projects in the highland province such as Da Lat urban and cultural park worth some $150 million, and Nam Ho Wonderland residential and tourism zone in Lam Dong on 300 hectares with total capital of $210 million.

It will also start work on Thuy Tu eco-town on 382 hectares in the central city of Da Nang and nearby Hai Van Pass with capital of nearly $1.7 billion in August.

In addition to the current business fields of hydropower and real property, Trung Nam is interested in green energy such as wind power in the central province of Ninh Thuan, said the group’s announcement.
