Transport sector must take the lead, says PM
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the transport industry to draw up long-term strategies and grasp opportunities available to meet the country’s demand for economic development.
Mr Dung made this request in Hanoi on August 24 during a ceremony to celebrate the sector’s 65th anniversary.
To achieve this target, PM Dung said, the transport sector must increase its management capacity, complete its institutions and strategic plans, apply new technology, closely supervise investment in construction, and combat all waste in these projects.
The government leader encouraged the sector to develop new forms of transport with a focus on mechanical engineering and operational efficiency of major enterprises and to mobilize investment from various economic sectors.
Mr Dung stressed the need for traffic safety to minimize traffic accidents.
Over the past two decades, the sector has built many large-scale traffic works of regional stature such as the Thang Long, Chuong Duong, and My Thuan Bridges, the tunnel through the Hai Van pass, Cai Lan Deep Water Port, the T1 terminal of Noi Bai Airport, and the HCM City-Trung Luong Expressway.
It has also upgraded most of the national roads, bridges, airfields, and quays across the country.
In rural areas, networks of roads now reach remote areas and help to significantly alleviate poverty and improve local people’s lives.
The first phase of construction of the second trans-Vietnam National Highway – Ho Chi Minh Road – has been basically completed.
With better infrastructure, transport services have grown by 8.5 percent annually, helping maintain the country’s high economic growth rate. – VOV
