Many people may select salt production is the hardest career among agro-forestry-fishery careers. Salt workers work hard under the blazing sun on their salt ponds. The number of grains of salt crystallised in the ponds is equal to the number of bead of sweat on salt workers’ shirts. Salt workers are always anxious about the weather. Over the past three years, salt workers across Viet Nam have had to stand consecutive losses of revenues. Climate changes and regular rains have caused losses for salt workers. Revenues that they have reaped were equal only to a third from the average level last years despite of their wholehearted efforts. The unstable life has forced salt workers to find other jobs to maintain their life.

However, salt production career will have a huge development potential if applied feasibly because salt production can produce many other products.

At a recent conference, a representative from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that salt production could produce many other products such as brine (a healthy kind of crystallised salt water with between 40 degree Celsius and 50 degree Celsius, containing rich of mineral substances); as well as mineral water produced from sea salt (a sort of drinking water better than normal others). Japan is currently using the ion dyalising and reciprocating technology to produce a special drinking water named Nigari helpful for health and skin, especially fat and dietetic people.

Viet Nam is boosting building tours into salt villages as well as salt tour villages so as to help tourists discover traditional and modern salt production technologies. With these tours, tourists will see how salt workers produce a grain of salt in their salt ponds by different traditional and modern technologies. Tourists can see with their own eyes the hard that salt workers have to experience in salt production by traditional technologies as well as the important role of science and technology in salt production.
