Survey finds mining firms pay bribes for information

Corruption exists in the mining industry mainly due to the lack of transparency and accountability in the system, speakers said at the ninth anti-corruption meeting for the extractive industry in Hanoi on Wednesday.
Ngo Manh Hung, deputy head of the Government Inspectorate’s Anti-corruption Bureau, said a survey conducted by his bureau found that of 110 mineral mining projects surveyed, 91 percent have to pay unofficial fees to gain access to extractive information.

These firms have to pay an average extra fee of 178 million dong (US$8,900), and in some cases the figure is as high as 5 billion dong ($250,000), he said. – Tuoitre
