State leader inspects nuclear power project
People in the central province of Ninh Thuan should support the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant for its future development, State President Nguyen Minh Triet said yesterday.
The President was talking during a field trip to the site of two reactors for a nuclear power station, where he looked at plans to build roads and provide water and electricity.
He later met people in Vinh Truong Hamlet in Thuan Nam District and Thai An Hamlet in Ninh Hai district where the power station’s two reactors will be built.
The President applauded the support given by local people and their administration, saying their efforts would help to meet the country’s growing demand for power.
The project will lead to new traffic systems, schools and other facilities – or the upgrading of existing services.
The President asked the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) Group, the project’s investor, and provincial authorities not only to resettle people, but find them jobs.
Viet Nam aims to complete the construction of the power station and start operating its first reactor in 2020. A second reactor will be built a year later. Together, the two reactors will have a combined of 4,000 MW.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, by 2020 the nation’s demand for power will increase to 294 billion kWh in 2020. It will almost double to 562 billion kWh by 2030.
The supply of raw materials for the electricity industry is expected to be only able to provide 230 billion kWh by 2020 and 293 billion kWh by 2030. — VNS
