Semiconductor factory can benefit the economy
The construction of a wafer-factory in Vietnam can help the country move from a labour-intensive to a hi-tech industry and climb the ladder of the supply chain.
This view was shared by some 200 local and international experts who attended a two-day symposium organised by Vietnam National University HCM City last week to discuss the local semiconductor industry.
Pham Ba Tuan, vice president of Switzerland’s Em Microelectric-Marin Sa, suggested building the first semi- conductor factory in Vietnam, as the semiconductor industry is the driver of most other industries. “With a wafer factory in Vietnam, part of the growing domestic semiconductor consumption can be satisfied and Vietnam can avoid spending hard-earned money from the labour-intensive industry on purchasing semiconductors,” Tuan said. In addition, the wafer factory will train skilled engineers and help develop semiconductor technology.
According to analysis, semiconductor consumption in Vietnam will reach about $1.9 billion by 2012 with a steady annual growth rate of 23 percent.
