Security World 2010 opens in Hanoi

The 5th Security World 2010 Conference and Showcase opened in Hanoi on March 23, featuring the theme “Building a practical information security strategy in today’s challenging business environment”.

The two-day event was co-organized by the General Department of Logistics and Technology under the Ministry of Public Security, the Vietnam Computer Emergency Response (VNCERT) under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) and the International Data Group (IDG Vietnam).

Participants focused on seeking highly-effective and cost-efficient solutions which will enable enterprises to optimize security investment’s benefit with the security budget being tightened due to the global financial crisis.

Nguyen Viet The, Director of the General Department of Logistics and Technology, said the rapid development of information technology (IT) has brought about the emerging challenge in the cyber space – cybercrime. “IT explosion as well as a flat world make this disaster more complex.

Lieutenant General Dang Van Hieu, Deputy Minister of Public Security, revealed that the Vietnamese government has recently approved a plan for a national information security development through 2020. “Accordingly, the national budget is expected to allocate VND765 billion for six priority projects to build laws and technical infrastructure for national information security”.

Delegates also examined the roadmap for deploying information security projects, with a focus on the IT security market in Vietnam and strategic planning for national digital security up to 2015.

Relating to encryption technologies, Georg Krause, the founder and CEO of CE-Infosys, shared real-world experience on analyzing types of virus attacks to design strong encryption algorithms against unauthorized penetration.

Alongside the conference, an exhibition was held to introduce the latest technologies for secure communications, network-security and data-protection. It attracted leading Vietnamese and global IT companies and groups, such as SecureMetric, Symantec, Oracle, BKAV, Misoft, M.Tech and NDS, displaying modern technologies and solutions on risk management and standardization, as well as data and storage security.

Vietnam is one of the top ten countries for spam delivery.More than 81,000 Vietnamese computers are infected with viruses, causing the loss of billions of VND.More than 1,000 websites were attacked by hackers last year, double that of 2008 and triple 2007’s figure.

In the first quarter this year, over 300 websites with the .vn domain were attacked by foreign hackers.
