Promoting seafood advantages in Mekong Delta region

The Mekong Delta region has more than 1.2 million hectares suitable for raising seafood, accounting for 60 percent of the country’s total area for aquaculture.

During the current Seafood Festival, a seminar on Vietnam’s seafood “potential – development and integration” was held in Can Tho on April 25.

Representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said that aquaculture is socio-economically efficient and can help restructure the economy in coastal and rural areas. Participants in the seminar agreed that the Mekong Delta region has the advantage of raising seafood, mainly shrimp, tra and basa fish.

Despite this advantage, the fisheries sector is still facing challenges during the process of international integration. It is necessary to organise similar seminars to discuss how to seize new opportunities to improve the competitiveness of aquaculture products.
