Private firm invests $1b to build hydropower plant

Xuan Thien Ninh Binh Co Ltd, under Xuan Thanh Economic Group, planned to carry out construction project of Dong Phu Yen hydropower plant in Son La province.

The construction on that new hydropower plant with designed capacity of 1,500 MW is expected to be finished in 2018.

The pre-feasibility study for this project was conducted by Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN), with Japan International Cooperation Agent (JICA) as the consultant. The construction work is divided into two phases: the period from 2010-2013 will be for investment preparation; and from 2013 to 2018 of construction and operation period.

This is the first water-storage hydropower plant to be applied and built in Vietnam so far. The advantages of this type of hydropower plant are friendly with environment, saving land for construction purpose.

The government office has lately approved in documents for realising this project on June 9, 2010 and appointed Xuan Thanh Group as the main investor.
