President Triet: Vietnam to Give Priorities to Viet Kieu
The Vietnamese Party and State will supply necessary information to overseas Vietnam, or Viet Kieu, protect their legitimate rights and helping them in preservation of national customs and traditions, President Nguyen Minh Triet said at the first meeting of overseas Vietnamese.

More than 1,500 delegates including 900 expatriates gathered the two-day event which opened in the capital city of Hanoi Nov 21.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy PM-Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem highly spoke of the meeting as a major forum for Vietnamese residents outbound and state agencies to exchange their opinions on policies for overseas Vietnamese in order for appropriate policies in the future.
“Nearly four million of Vietnamese nationals living and working in 101 nations and territories around the world, including about 300,000 university graduates, are an integral and important force of the country,†Khiem emphasized.
Overseas remittances to the country reached US$7.4 billion in 2008. The figure, however, are likely to fall to US$5.8 billion in 2009 as a result of the global financial crisis.
So far overseas Vietnamese have invested US$2 billion into 3,000 projects in Vietnam.
A seminar themed “Expatriate businessmen contributes to build the country†and an honoring ceremony of expatriate businessmen took place Nov 22.
Expatriate businessmen met with leaders of provinces and cities on the same day to study investment opportunities and potentials.
About 200 female overseas Vietnamese also met with the Vietnam Women’s Union on the occasion. (VNA, CPV)
