Power Demand in 2 Biggest Cities in Vietnam Soars 30% in May
Power consumption in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two biggest cities, has surged 30% from a year earlier since early May.
Hanoi’s power consumption is estimated at over 30 million kWh per day, said Nguyen Anh Tuan, deputy general director of Hanoi Power Corporation (EVN Hanoi).
The demand in Ho Chi Minh City has soared to between 49 million kWh and 50 million kWh per day, said Pham Quoc Bao, deputy general director of Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVN HCMC).
In recent days, the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) has cut between 18% and 20% of power supply; local producers incurred blackouts twice per week, and households in rural areas all week long in recent days, which is much higher than EVN’s announcement of 6%.
However, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said power supply will be prioritized for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during this summer.
Vietnam is forecast to face a power shortage of one billion kWh this year, including 600 million kWh between April and June.
